Is food included with the weekly rent payment?
In addition to the rent payment, Safe Haven Transitional Living asks residents to contribute $20.00 per week towards house food.  House food includes various essentials to provide residents with breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Residents are still encouraged to provide some food for themselves which can be kept in their personal assigned cabinet. 

How many residents can Safe Haven accommodate? [WOMENS RECOVERY HOUSE?]

Safe Haven currently has two men's recovery houses located at 446 and 488 W. Market St. in York, PA.

  • Our 446 W. Market St. home is a ten bedroom, five thousand square feet Victorian Style home that can comfortably accommodate twenty-one residents.

  • Our 488 W. Market St. home is a six bedroom, four thousand sqaure feet home that can accommodate fourteen residents comfortably. 

 What items should I bring with me while I am residing at Safe Haven?
In addition to your clothing and personal hygene items Safe Haven asks that you bring:

  • Valid state identification and social security card

  • Towels and washcloths

  • An alarm clock

  • Money for a bus pass

  • Any extra pillows if more than 1 pillow is required

  • Toiletries

 How long is resident's commitment to Safe Haven?
 Upon entry into Safe Haven the residents are asked to make a six month commitment to safe Haven Transitional Living. These six months allow the residents a better opportunity to:

  • Start to become more comfortable with themselves and their newfound sobriety.

  • Obtain a sponsor in the twelve step fellowship of  their choosing.

  • An opportunity to actively work the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous.

How long is resident's commitment to Safe Haven?

 Are residents allowed to receive mail at the Safe Haven address?
Yes, the residents of a Safe Haven Recovery House are allowed to receive mail at the Safe Haven address.  All mail may be forwarded to the attention of the resident at 446 West Market Street York, PA 17401. â€‹

 Are the residents of Safe Haven allowed to have cellphones?
Yes, the residents of a Safe Haven Recovery House are allowed to have their personal cellphones upon arrival at Safe Haven Transitional Living.  This provides the new resident with the means to stay in touch with his sponsor and family, as well as actively seek employment.

 Are residents allowed to have visitors?
Yes, the residents of Safe Haven Recovery Houses are allowed to have visitors.  We encourage friends and family members to visit the new resident whenever they choose to do so.  We simply ask that visitors be off the premises by 11:00pm each evening. 

 Are residents allowed to have their personal vehicles while residing at Safe Haven?
During the first thirty days of residency personal vehicles are restricted from Safe Haven Transitional Living.  This is simply to allow for the new resident to adjust to his new surroundings as well as focus on his personal commitments.  After thirty days or residency, each resident will then be allowed to have his personal vehicle at Safe Haven. 

 Are residents allowed to have personal computers?
Currently, our residents are not allowed to have personal computers while residing at Safe Haven Transitional Living.  However, we do provide a house computer in all of our houses with full internet access for the residents of Safe Haven Transitional Living.

 How many residents are assigned to each bedroom?
The average numbers of residents assigned to each bedroom is approximately two to three.  We do have one bedroom that accommodates four residents.  This four person bedroom is approximately eight hundred square feet and comes with a private bathroom. 

 Are there jobs readily available in York?
York currently has a large industrial base offering employment opportunities.  We work very closely with multiple employers and can usually assist the new residents in obtaining employment within their first seven to ten days of residency at Safe Haven.

 Are residents allowed to leave Safe Haven overnight to visit with friends and family?
During the new residents first two weeks at Safe Haven Transitional Living we ask that the new resident does not return home.  This allows the resident the opportunity to become more familiar with their surroundings and give them a chance to start to develop their support group.  After completing the two week probationary period, residents are allowed one twenty-four hour pass per week, or a forty-eight hour pass every other week.  Exceptions can be made for special events such as holdiays.  These requests will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

 Are there Twelve Step fellowship meetings in close proximity to Safe Haven?
Safe Haven Transitional Living is centrally located in the heart of York, Pennsylvania.  Each day there are anywhere from three to five Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings within a five block radius of our houses.  

 Is public transportation available?
We do have public transportation provided by Rabbit Transit.  Rabbit Transit will pick up and drop off directly in front of our 488 W. Market St. house.  We recommend that if the resident is planning on taking advantage of public transportation they obtain a monthly bus pass.  A bus pass can be purchased directly from Rabbit Transit for $42.00 per month.  For more information on Rabbit Transit please visit them at http://www.rabbittransit.org/.
